Poem: We Can
Sight Words: we, can

Miscellaneous: We have a lot of kiddos that need extra tools and resources to be the best they can be. Not every kiddo needs the same things. To help kiddos understand this concept we use band-aids. I start by telling the kiddos that we were playing outside and pretend someone fell and skinned up their elbow. I then ask each kiddo up to me and ask where their boo-boo was. Some point to a real boo-boo, others make up a pretend boo-boo, all of which are somewhere other than their elbow. For each kiddo I put the band-aid on the same spot; their elbow. After I get through everyone I explain how silly that was and how I didn't help those who had a boo-boo in other places. This is like certain friends in our classroom that need a chart, or cubes to help them learn. After this lesson, they have a bigger perspective and love for those who seem to be getting different things than they are.

Reading:
Comprehension Strategy: This week we learned about print concepts. Print concepts are the parts of a book including the front and back covers, the title, the title page, and where we begin reading. Students need to have an understanding of how a book words before we can dive into small guided reading groups.

We also learned about Word Work. Word Work is when students work on building words. We start with letters and we then work in our sight words. Students practiced this week using dry erase boards. We created an I-Chart together of things we need to make sure we are doing during the round.

Accuracy: This week we continued to learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make! We continued to made a circle map for the each letter with things that start with that letter after reading our letter book. Each day we also are introduced to a zoo phonics character that helps us with a motion and sound for each letter. Have your child show you the motions!

Writing: This week we practiced writing the letters Dd, Cc, Ee, and Ff. Each day we listen and watch the letter song, practice tracing the letter on our handwriting sheet and then color and cut our letter headband. We always end Writer's Workshop by strengthening our hands with Fine Motor Boot Camp activities for those who finish.

Math: This week we continued learning about number 11-16. We used number mats that we used to recognize the number, write the number, trace the tally marks, recognize the number on the tens frame, count out that number of counters to cover the bears, and then make using playdoh. This helped our recognition of each teen number and our ability to count out that specific number. Have your child practice counting out specific numbers of objects like 14 and 18 at home!

We also introduced new skills with our September Calendar Journal!

Content: This week we learned about families. We know that everyone has a family, but we learned that families can be very different. We started by reading a story about families. We learned who can be in families, things families like to do, and things families like. We listed things we knew on our tree map. The rest of the week we shared our family pictures and added them to a board in our classroom where they will stay for the year. Our families are important to us and we want them apart of our learning at school! We finished the week with a family glyph. We used colored squares to add to our black house to represent who lives in our house with us.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we learned more about how to use the Calm Corner. The Calm Corner is a safe place in our room with lights, a comfy pillow to sit on, as well as fidgets and breathing tools. Last week we learned about the parts of our brain and how they work. This week we talked about how we can use the Calm Corner as a strategy when our Amygdala is out. The Amygdala alerts us when we are feeling angry, hungry, upset, sad, etc. We know that it is okay to have these big emotions, but we need to respond in a safe and healthy way. Students can choose to go to the calm corner and use the 3 minute sand timer to know how long to stay.

When they arrive they do the following:
1. Point to their feeling.
2. Set the sand timer.
3. Find a tool in the tote that they find calming.
4. Put the materials away when the sand timer runs out.
5. Point to their new feeling.
6. They may grab a ticket that reaffirms that they were able to calm down.

This week we took time to introduce new items in the calm corner and learn the right and wrong ways to use each tool. These items include hand lotion, a wooden block fidget, and a small magnadoodle (to write or draw).
