Comprehension Strategy: This week we learned the difference between reality and fantasy. Reality means that a story is real, what happens in the story could really happen in real life. Fantasy is fake. What happens in the story, is make believe. We started first by using different examples and giving a thumbs up for reality and thumbs down for fantasy. Later in the week we sorted cards that were fantasy and reality. We ended the week by sorting different books into reality and fantasy groups. At the end of the week we read a story from Jacob titled "Owl". After reading students had to determine if the story was reality of fantasy. They did great!

Accuracy: This week we continued learning about letter names and sounds. By next week we will have learned every letter of the alphabet. If your child has not mastered the letter names and sounds they will have a blue packet that will be coming home. Please work with your child at home on this skill. It is so important to master letter sounds and names in order to move onto bigger and more complex skills.
This week we learned the letter names and sounds to the letters Hh, Vv, Ww, and Kk. Each day we made our letter map, read our letter book, wrote the letter and made our letter hat!

Vocabulary: This week we read the story "Apples, Apples, Apples". The words we learned were recipe, diced, orchard, core, flesh, and stem.

Writing: This week we learned how to write the letters Hh, Vv, Ww, and Kk. After writing the letters we worked on our fine motor skills by coloring and cutting out our letter hats!

Math: We continued learning about 2D shapes this week. We created a chart together recording the number of sides and vertices as well as a real life example. These things are what they will need to know when being assessed next week on shapes. On Thursday students were able to show what they know by coloring the shape said aloud. It is our goal that students will be able to recognize each of the 4 2D shapes we learn about.

Vocabulary: This week our words were sides and vertices. A side is a straight line on the outside of a shape. A vertices is a corner where to sides meet. Next week students will begin to record these words in their math vocabulary journal using the app Book Creator on the ipad.

Content: This week our focus was APPLES! We started the week by learning the parts of an apple. Students had a smaller paper version that we labeled the parts of our apple picture. The rest of the week we spent exploring apples by writing down descriptive words on our circle map and doing an apple investigation with an apple we brought from home. Our apple investigation included measuring how many cubes tall our apple was. How heavy is was, what color it was, and if it still had it's stem.

We finished our week by painting our paper plate red and making an apple out of our circle map. On Friday we even made applesauce! We practiced dicing up apples and used a recipe to measure out ingredients to our instant pot. After adding the apples, water, and cinnamon we waited for it to cook, then enjoyed a yummy treat when it was finished.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we continued learning about having a growth mindset. We practiced by drawing shapes one day. One of the shapes was a star and it was really hard! But no one gave up and said they couldn't do it. Instead we tried harder and worked through it! We also read the story, "Giraffes Can't Dance". This story is about a giraffe named Gerald. Everyone makes fun of him when he can't dance like everyone else. He doesn't give up and finds a rhythm that is just right for him and turns out to be really great! After reading we made a list of things we can't do YET. YET is the key word, because if we have a growth mindset we aren't going to give up. Even though we can't do them now, we're going to keep trying.

We also read the story "The Dot". We were encouraged to draw a picture using one single dot on our paper. It was hard for some of us, but we ended up having some cool drawings! Ava decided to use her dot as the inside of her flower.

Accuracy: We are continuing to learn the letters and sounds they make. This week we read the letter book and created our letter map to the following letters Mm, Nn, Pp, Rr, and Bb.

This week we also started learning about reading strategies. We learned that a strategy is a tool that helps us read. The strategy this week was to use Eagle Eyes. Eagle Eyes mean that we use our eyes to look at the picture and beginning sound to make sure we are reading the correct word. To practice this skill we used picture cards and worked on reading the word. For example, the picture card shown below looks like an airplane but the word is not airplane because it starts with a "j".

Vocabulary: This week was our first week for extended vocabulary. Each week we will have a book with 6 words that we dig deeper to understand the meaning. We talk about each word and it's meaning before reading. While I read, students are actively listening for those words within the story. This week we read the story, "Friends at School" and the words we learned were busy, tortoise, job, container, company, and scoop.

Writing: This week in Writing we continued learning how to form the letters Mm, Nn, Pp, Rr, and Bb. We finish each handwriting sheet with coloring and cutting practice with creating our letter hat, then

Math: Students must be able to identify 2D shapes and be able to describe each one by explaining how many sides and corners (vertices). This week we were introduced to 2D shapes by adding it to the vocab journal on the ipad and using the geoboards to make 2D shapes. This was a lesson that they did with the guest teacher. Take a look at last year's students!

We also used playdoh to recognize shapes and outline each shape that was said aloud. We reviewed the number of sides as we used playdoh to trace each shape.

Vocabulary: This week students learned what a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle were. They watched as I modeled how to record these answers into a math vocab journal on the ipad. Each week we will have new math vocabulary words that help us learn about the new standard.

Content: This week we geared up for our Author Visit next week Christopher Canyon! Each day we read another one of his books and finished with a sun craft to go along with the book "Sunshine on My Shoulders".

This week we began our 2 week unit on having a Growth Mindset. A growth mindset means that instead of giving up, we grow our brain by doing something hard and we try again and try harder when we can't do something the first time. This week we used MOJO a character from Class Dojo to illustrate this idea of a growth mindset. Feel free to check out the videos below!

Comprehension Strategy: This week we learned about a new choice; Read with Someone. We all practiced and decided the things we needed to do while at Read with Someone. Together we made our I-Chart with our expectations of what we need to do while at Read with Someone. We also learned how to pick a partner and how we need to sit while at Read with Someone. We learned the phrase EEKK, Elbow Elbow Knee Knee.

We also were able to learn about more word work choices. Students can now use magnadoodles to write their letters and sight words.

Accuracy: This week we continued learning about letters in the alphabet and the sounds they make. Each day we met the zoo phonics character, read the letter book, and made our circle map. The letters that we learned this week were Gg, Jj, Qq, Uu, and Ss.

Writing: In Writer's Workshop we are continuing our focus on handwriting. We are consciously thinking about holding our pencil the A-OKAY way while learning how to write the letter of the day. We then building fine motor strength by coloring and cutting our letter hat each day. Early finishers do a Fine Motor Boot Camp tray with activities that range from play-doh syringes, putty beads, hole punches, and more!

Math: This week in math we learned about positional words. These words include, but are not limited to: above, below, next to, beside, in front of, and behind. We watched a video that helped introduce the concept and then we practiced moving our stuffies wherever Mrs. Keller said! We also practiced identifying numbers 17, 18, 19, and 20.

Content: This week we reviewed our colors. Each day was a different color.
-On Monday we wore red, and painted a heart with red paint and Q-tips.
-On Tuesday we wore blue and tore blue paper to glue onto a balloon.
-On Wednesday we wore yellow and colored a sun with yellow crayons.
-On Thursday we wore green and used green markers to color a leaf.
-On Friday we wore our favorite color and read the story "My Favorite Color is Rainbow". After reading we made our rainbow craft.

This week we focused on the phrase "I Matter". We read a variety of books and one on day each kiddo finished the phrase "I like myself because..." I wrote their response on a label that they wore proudly on their shirt for the rest of the day. We also read The OK book with the guest teacher Mrs. Smith. On Friday we ended the week by reading the book "My Favorite Color is Rainbow". This book is about being who you are, which may mean a lot of things. The little arch in the story loved every bit of each color and what it meant that he decided instead of being on color, he would be rainbow. I ended the week by telling each kiddo that they should be proud of who they are because they are special and they should shine no matter what color is their favorite!
