Earth Day

Poem: Pizza Pie
Sight Words: help, off

Reading:
Comprehension Strategy: Comprehension Strategy: This week we worked on the skill cause and effect. Readers understand that in-text events happen (effects), along with the reason why they happen (causes). When students recognize this relationship, comprehension is increased.

We also learned about compound words this week! We watched a video that let us practice reading compound words and we also used google slides to determine what the compound word was.

Vocabulary: This week we read the story "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle. The words that we learned were seed, melts, sails, gently, burst, and drift.

iPads: This week during reading students watched a video about plant parts on Brain Pop Jr. They used Word Play to demonstrate what they learned about plant parts and sent their illustrations to me!

They also used the app Skywriter to practice writing sight words.

Writing: This week we finished our opinion writing unit and students wrote their final writing piece. After our end of the unit writing, we learned about list making. We talked about the different kinds of lists we could make and then made a few of our own!

Math: We solved subtraction stories problems by using math tools and taking away those that we were subtracting. We also drew pictures and put x's through the ones that were being taken away. On Thursday we did a 3-Act Math activity. Before lunch students were told that when they returned from recess we would be using OREO's for our math lesson. When they returned we found that some were missing! We had to use our knowledge of subtraction to figure out how many were taken away and how many were then left. Students used dry erase boards to illustrate their thinking and the process they went through.

Vocabulary: This week the phrase was take away. Students learned that take away means to get rid of.

iPads: For ipads this week, students used the app Number Rack to show ways to make 10. Students used QR codes from previous weeks to reveal an addition sentence (4 + __ = 10). Students used the number rack to then find the missing number and writing the addition sentence. Students learned how to take a screen shot of the app and then put into pic collage of the different ways to make 10.

Content: This week we took time to talk about Earth Day and what we can do to protect the earth. We also spent some of our content time finishing up our insect unit by completing our butterfly observation journals and setting our butterflies free. Earlier in the week we started an experiment that we'll finish next week. We were given flowers from Shannon's Flowers. With the flowers we made predictions about what color tie would do to the flowers. We will monitor and observe the changes throughout the next week. We finished the week with an Earth Day craft using tissue paper to make the earth and wrote one way we can protect/save the earth.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we spent time learning how to apologize. We started the week by listening to "The Blame Game" by the Bernstein Bears. Then we learned about the 4 Step Apology. This is important because we are thinking more about what we did and why we are apologizing. We then practiced apologizing with different scenarios that could very well happen during the day. We then used a chart that had a picture of a mouse, monster, and us on it. We discussed the different ways that each of those characters handle tough situations. We learned it is important to use calm phrases that start with "I" and try to think of a win win solution.

ABC Countdown to Summer:
D- We had a fun dance party day. We had spurts throughout the day where we spent time dancing around and being silly.

E- We celebrated with Estimation Day. Looking at a cup filled with skittles, we made predictions as to how many skittles were in the cup total. After making our guesses we counted and Cayman had the closest guess!

F- We enjoyed lots of yummy fruit for snack on F day!

G- Friday was spent playing games! In the morning we played Heads Up, Seven Up and had so much fun!

NEXT WEEK:
Reading: Students will...
-learn about contractions.
-how to monitor and clarify when reading.

WritingStudents will...
-learn how to write a letter.
-learn how to write a card.

MathStudents will...
-review math skills including addition and subtraction stories, ways to make 10, and decomposing numbers into 2 ways.

ContentStudents will learn about plants and living things.

Eric Carle

Poem: Merry-Go-Round
Sight Words: find, now

Reading:
Comprehension Strategy: This week we worked on the skill Back Up and Reread. When students come to words they don’t know, they skip over the word until they come to the end of the sentence or passage. Then readers back up and read the sentence again, using the first letter or letters of the skipped word and their context clues to decode the unknown word.

We also learned about r-controlled words this week for our word families. We made lists with -ar, -er, -ir, -or, and -ur. We started the week by learning about the bossy r. Each day we had a song to listen to and then we made our lists.

Vocabulary: This week we read the story "Hermit the Crab" by Eric Carle. The words we learned and used included: frightening, plain, decorate, discovered, sturdy, and grazed.

iPads: This week for ipads students scanned a QR code and listened to Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". Students then used the app Draw and Tell to retell the story of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". Students used the color option that has designs that look like what Eric Carle uses in his illustrations. Here are a few of our creations!

We also used QR codes for our second round. We scanned codes on cards that revealed pictures. We then used a dry erase marker to write the missing vowel. This was a great review from when we learned about vowel pairs.

Writing: This week we reviewed ending punctuation. On Monday we watched a video to remind us of the 3 ending marks we learn about in kindergarten (period, exclamation mark, and question mark). Then we used Google Slides to read sentences and determine what ending mark is missing. They did great! We also reviewed opinion writing and made a heart list of things we love that we could write about.

Math: This week we practiced solving addition story problems. When solving addition story problems and creating story problems we always ask, "How many do we have all together?" This is how we added in our vocabulary word for the week. Students practiced this skill using math tools and  the app Doodle Buddy. Students also practiced this skill by working with a partner to tell and solve story problems during math with someone.

Vocabulary: We learned about the phrase all together. Students learned that all together means how many we have total.

iPads: This week we used a new app called Number Frames to review ways to make 10. Students scanned QR codes to reveal an addition sentence including 8 + __ = 10. Students used the tens frame in the app to find the answer.

Content: This week we spent time learning about Eric Carle. We read many of his books and did a few different activities that went along with some of his books. At the end of the week students spent time with each teacher in rotations to create crafts inspired by Eric Carle books.

This week we spent time learning about leadership. We started the week by reading the book "Swimmy". Then we talked about the difference between being a leader and boss. We did this by sorting cards into 2 categories and talked about what makes someone a leader and a boss. Then we made a Leaders Act, Say, Think chart. Later in the week we watched a video from Kid President that talked about what made good leaders and we ended the week with listing leaders in our own lives.

ABC Countdown to Summer: We are into the final days before summer vacation. We like to celebrate in kindergarten with special days to countdown to z! This week we had Stuffed Animal Day, Bubble Day, and Chalk Day!
