Poem: Come and Listen
Sight Words: me, to

Reading:

Accuracy: We are continuing to learn the letters and sounds they make. This week we read the letter book and created our letter map to the following letters Mm, Nn, Pp, Rr, and Bb.

This week we also started learning about reading strategies. We learned that a strategy is a tool that helps us read. The strategy this week was to use Eagle Eyes. Eagle Eyes mean that we use our eyes to look at the picture and beginning sound to make sure we are reading the correct word. To practice this skill we used picture cards and worked on reading the word. For example, the picture card shown below looks like an airplane but the word is not airplane because it starts with a "j".

Vocabulary: This week was our first week for extended vocabulary. Each week we will have a book with 6 words that we dig deeper to understand the meaning. We talk about each word and it's meaning before reading. While I read, students are actively listening for those words within the story. This week we read the story, "Friends at School" and the words we learned were busy, tortoise, job, container, company, and scoop.

Writing: This week in Writing we continued learning how to form the letters Mm, Nn, Pp, Rr, and Bb. We finish each handwriting sheet with coloring and cutting practice with creating our letter hat, then

Math: Students must be able to identify 2D shapes and be able to describe each one by explaining how many sides and corners (vertices). This week we were introduced to 2D shapes by adding it to the vocab journal on the ipad and using the geoboards to make 2D shapes. This was a lesson that they did with the guest teacher. Take a look at last year's students!

We also used playdoh to recognize shapes and outline each shape that was said aloud. We reviewed the number of sides as we used playdoh to trace each shape.

Vocabulary: This week students learned what a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle were. They watched as I modeled how to record these answers into a math vocab journal on the ipad. Each week we will have new math vocabulary words that help us learn about the new standard.

Content: This week we geared up for our Author Visit next week Christopher Canyon! Each day we read another one of his books and finished with a sun craft to go along with the book "Sunshine on My Shoulders".

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we began our 2 week unit on having a Growth Mindset. A growth mindset means that instead of giving up, we grow our brain by doing something hard and we try again and try harder when we can't do something the first time. This week we used MOJO a character from Class Dojo to illustrate this idea of a growth mindset. Feel free to check out the videos below!
