Comprehension Strategy: This week we took time learning about the Main Idea and Key Details. The Main Idea is the what the story is mostly about. Many times there is a clue in the title or on the front page about what the main idea is. Key details are other things that happen in the story.

Throughout the week we used a variety of strategies to help understand the Main Idea and Key Details. We started each day with a Mystery Bag. Students took turns pulling items out and determining what the main idea. The first day we pulled out a thermometer, tissue, hand sanitizer, and cough drop. The main idea was sickness.

We also used pictures and students had to determine the main idea and vice versa. We provided the main idea (transportation) and students gave key details.

Throughout the week we continued reading stories and producing the main idea and key details.

Accuracy: This week we spent time learning about opposites. Opposites are words that are different. We learned about opposites throughout the week and produced the opposite of the word given as practice.

This week in writing we started our 3rd writing unit; stories. We brainstormed a list of things we love, things we are good at, things from the past, and things we know a lot about. These help us come up with ideas for stories to write.

Vocabulary: This week our words were tens and ones. We use base tens blocks to understand the concept of tens and ones. A tens block is 10 ones, and a ones block is one.

Throughout the week we learned about tens and ones through videos and practice using base ten blocks. Students are given a number and then they show that number using the blocks and explaining how many tens and ones. We also used tens frames to practice showing numbers with tens and ones.

Content: This week we learned about hibernation this week with our Teddy Bears! We started the week by bringing in a stuffed animal from home and introducing him/her to the class. We learned about different animals that hibernate in the winter and even went on a hibernation hunt around the school!

We also did a science experiment with Gummy Bears. We predicted what would happen to the gummy bear in certain substances.

The rest of the week we prepared for Valentine's Day by making our bags and having other fun! On Friday we decorated heart cookies with our 4th Grade Buddies. The rest of the day we passed out valentines, played pin the kiss on Mrs. Keller, and had our Teddy Bear picnic. We also counted m&m's and determined the color that was most and least.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we learned about having a social filter. A social filter is when we decide what needs to stay as a thought and what is okay to say aloud. We read stories and sorted sayings into things we think and say. We also turned mean thoughts into kind sayings.
