Fairy Tales

Poem: Fairy Tales
Sight Words: of, get

Comprehension Strategy: This week we took time learning about cause and effect. The cause is something that happens. The effect is what happens in result. We used simple concepts as examples to understand the big idea. Students knew that if it is hot outside the effect is lots of sweating.

We read different fairy tales throughout the week where we determined the cause and effect.

Accuracy: This week we spent time learning about words in the -ump and -unk word families. This is the first week we really got into chunking. We used Chunky Monkey to stretch out and read words in the -unk and -ump words. We also colored the chunk during our Word Hunt on Wednesday.

This week in writing we learned about capital letters. We learned that not only does the first word in a sentence start with a capital but also names of places, people, pets, months of the year and more. We used baseball "caps" to find the words that needed capitalized.

We also reviewed ending punctuation. We talked about how an exclamation mark is used to show excitement and a question mark is used to show when we are asking a question. We practiced by adding the correct punctuation sticker to a variety of sentences then looked for ending marks in the story "Oh no, George!".

Vocabulary: This week our words were column and row. A column goes up and down on a graph and a row goes side to side on a graph.

Throughout the week we learned about different types of graphs. We learned that graphs give us information. They were quick to tell me about a pie chart that they see when they show what they know with Mrs. Keller. We use ESGI in which they strive for a full green circle (they have mastered the skill).

Throughout the week we practiced reading different graphs and understanding the data behind it. We started with a bar graph that we charted our favorite utensil, crayons or markers. Then we used a tally chart to record our favorite character. We finished the week we a pictograph to show our favorite fairy tale during the week.

Content: This week we learned about fairy tales! We read fairy tales throughout the week and even created our own using the Fairy Tale Maker app on the ipad. We started the week by retelling the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. They were in groups of 4 and retold the story using puppets.

We measured things around the room with the Giant's feet and compared which items were longer, shorter, or the same length. We also drew a directed drawing of castle and painted with our water colors. We ended the week with our Fairy Tale Ball where we danced in our outfits and acted like royalty. We had so much fun!

We also did a 3 Little Pigs STEM project where students had to use 12 candy DOTS and toothpicks to build a sturdy house for their little pig. The Big Bad Wolf (blow dryer) came to blow the house down and it had to stay standing!

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
