Comprehension Strategy: This week we learned about the Author's Purpose. Author's Purpose is the reason why the author writes a story. There are 3 reasons an author writes a story: 1) Persuade 2) Inform and 3) Entertain. Each day we talked in more depth about each area and used our own stories in the classroom to explain the reason the author wrote that book.

Accuracy: This week we read and wrote words in the -ug and -ut word families. We practiced the strategy Stretchy Snake by stretching out the words and blending sounds together to read words like cut, mug, and hut.

Then we did Write the Slide. Pictures appear one at a time on the board, as a class we determine the word and work on stretching out the word and writing all the letters on our own dry erase boards. Then the word is revealed and we get to see if we were correct.

Vocabulary: This week our math words were greater than, less than, and equal.
Greater than: the number is bigger.
Less than: the number is smaller.
Equal: the numbers are the same.

To practice this skill throughout the week we did a variety of activities that helped us understand the concept. To start the week we did a game called Grab, Count, Compare. To do this we grabbed a handful with each hand and laid it on our paper. We counted each hand print and determine which hand was greater and less.

We also played Target Number. A few kiddos each round pulled a number out of the bucket. They had to determine if the number was greater, less, or equal to the Target Number, which changed every slide. They came up and put their number in the designated column.

We ended the week with the card game WAR. Students got into partners and each pulled a card. They then had to determine which one was greater. The person with the card that was greater, got to keep their card and their partners.

Content: This week was all about SNOW! We stared by talking about what we know about snow and how snow is cold. We have to be prepared to play in the snow by wearing warm clothes. We took pictures of ourselves wearing our warm gear then labeled our own pictures!

We then made snowmen in a bag. It was so fun to decorate the outside and then smush the shaving cream around inside the bag!

We then mixed 1/2 cup conditioner and 2 1/2 cups baking soda together to make fake snow! We mixed and then explored by touching and squeezing and building balls just like real snow.

We ended the week with one of Mrs. Keller's favorite snowman crafts.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we talked about teamwork and the importance of working together. We practiced teamwork by building a cup tower together and read lots of great stories about teamwork. One of which is a favorite of Mrs. Keller's; "Can I Play Too?" by Mo Willems.
