Spiders

Poem: Higglety Pigglety Pop!
Sight Words: has, on

Reading: This week our comprehension skill was compare and contrast. Comparing and contrasting text assists the reader by engaging them in thinking critically. Readers go beyond descriptions, summaries, or retells and gain a deeper understanding of what they are comparing or contrasting.

The week starts off with a description of what it means to compare and contrast. We use the example of a doughnut and a cupcake. They are the same because they are both sweet and have icing. They are different because one is eaten at breakfast and the other in the evening or daytime. One has a hole in the middle, one does not. We practiced comparing stories and we compared characters within the same story. We used a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the characters in Alexander and the Wind Up Mouse on Thursday. On Friday we used an app called Popplet to compare and contrast 2 different Halloween stories we read during the week.

Vocab: We read the story "It Is the Wind" and learned about the words: creeks, hare, hinge, howling, path, and sways.

Our word family this week was the -en word family. Take a look at our list!

We also started Word Work this week! Students brainstormed our expectations for Word Work and we made an I-chart together. During this time students are to be working at writing and/or making words. This week we learned how to use the dry erase boards and the magna doodles.

Writing: This week we learned how to be a smarty speller. We used our chart to remember the steps to be a smarty speller. Together we worked on writing words by saying it slow like a turtle and then chopping it out like a snake.

We also learned what a true story is. We used the Story Hand Chart to recall the 3 things we need when writing a true story: Who the story is about. Where the characters are. And what happened. We started writing a class story about grandparents day. I modeled writing the words and drawing a picture, then students went back to their tables and began writing the same sentence.

Math: This week in math we did our first corporation STEM activity. We first read the story "Harriot's Halloween" and read a letter from Harriot's mom. The mission was to build a bag that could hold Harriot's extra halloween candy. We did a rip test to determine the best material to use and also made a map listing the characteristics of a bag. We then designed our bag and on Friday we built and tested our final product. Everyone earned a 2 or 3 out of 3 points possible!

Content: This week we learned all about spiders. We started the week out by reading a story and working on a tree map where we listed what we knew/learned about spiders. On Wednesday we worked on labeling the parts of a spider. The rest of the week we worked on our craftivity of making a spider and writing down facts about spiders.
