Comprehension Strategy: This week we took time learning about reading strategies. A reading strategy helps us read words that are hard and tricky and to become great readers. Each day of the week we learned about a new strategy and practiced that skill in isolation. Take a look at the strategies throughout the week!

Monday was all about Eagle Eye and Fishy Lips. Eagle Eye is when we use the picture to help us figure out an unknown word. Fishy Lips is when you look at the beginning sound and get your lips ready to make the first sound. These 2 strategies go hand in hand and work well together to decode words.

On Tuesday we learned about Stretchy Snake. We're familiar with Stretchy Snake because we use this strategy when we read words in our word families each week. When we use this strategy we say each sound in the word then blend it all together to read the word.

On Wednesday we learned about Chunky Monkey and how to find small words inside bigger words.

Skippy Frog and Tryin' Lion were next. Skippy frog is when we skip the word and come back when we can't figure it out. Sometimes reading the rest of the sentence will give us enough clues to figure out the tricky word.

Tryin' Lion is when we read the sentence and it doesn't seem to make sense so we try another word with a different ending or beginning sound that might make sense.

On Friday we reviewed using all the strategies with an on level reader about the coral reef! On each page we saw a character that we met earlier in the week and we used that strategy to solve tricky words when reading.

Accuracy: This week we spent time learning about words in the -ing and -ick word families. We learned a jingle that that helped us remember that i-n-g spells ing.

This week in writing we finished our 2nd writing unit and worked on a final story with a title page. They had to make sure that they used everything that we have learned in this unit including:

  • 4 WOW picture
  • spaces in between words.
  • capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, lowercase throughout the rest of the sentence.
  • ending mark.
  • labels in picture.
  • speech bubbles!

Vocabulary: This week our word was subtract. Subtract means to take away.

Throughout the week we practiced subtraction a variety of ways including using a number line, using a picture and subtraction bowling! Students drew a picture to symbolize the pins and took the number away that students knocked over.

At the end of the week we got to show what we know with Mrs. Keller. If your child is struggling with subtraction, they are bringing home subtraction flash cards to practice at home. To do this encourage them to draw a picture on scrap paper or use toys or other items around the house to take away.

It was the start of a new month so new calendar journals during math!

Content: This week we learned about Dental Health. We practiced flossing the food out of our teeth with play-doh in mega blocks and brushing with paint and toothbrushes. We learned how important it is to brush in little circles and to visit the dentist 2 times a year! We also learned what things are good and bad for our teeth by sorting play food on a smiley tooth and a frowny tooth. We did a plaque experiment where we saw what sugar build up can do for our teeth.

To end the week we did a Lost Tooth Subtraction craft. Each kiddo started with 10 marshmallows which represented teeth. Then they had to "loose" some. They completed their craft by gluing the remaining "teeth" on their paper and completing the subtraction problem.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we learned about compassion. We read stories and we watched videos and we put ourselves in situations of others to practice showing compassion. Compassion is when we feel for others and try to help them feel better.
