Christmas Around the World

Poem: A Little Elf
Sight Words: she, you

Reading:
Comprehension Strategy: This week we worked on retelling holiday stories. We used a chart to show how the beginning and end are small but a lot happens in the middle of the story.

This week we learned words that belong to the -am word family. We made a list, went on a word hunt, and wrote the word with our word slides.

Vocabulary: This week we learned words that would help us with understand terms during holidays around the world. Those words were passport, country, world, tradition, celebration, and holiday. Students were then able to apply these words when traveling to 5 different countries throughout the week to learn about Christmas traditions.

iPads: This week students worked at scanning QR codes for many rounds. For morning work, students scanned QR codes that sent them to videos of different holiday traditions. For reading students scanned QR codes within books and listened to the book. After listening students used a picture of Santa to record what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

The second round students used QR code cards to scan which brought them to a holiday picture. They then used the app Skywriter or Doodlebuddy to stretch out the word and write all the sounds they hear in the word.

Math: This week we reviewed math skills that we have learned all ready this 9 weeks. One day we reviewed 3D shapes by watching the video and then rolling a cube which landed on one of the 3D shapes. When it landed on the shape, students had to recall the name of the shape, how many vertices, and how many faces.

We also reviewed addition within 10. We practiced finding the answer by counting on and using a number line.

iPads: This week students used BOOM learning to practice with a few different math skills. One deck had students add quickly with 0. This helps students understand that anytime a number is added to 0 the answer is always that number. 0+2=2. The other deck they worked on helped with subitizing. Students looked at a tens frame and had to count the ornaments and click the number.

Content: This week students learned all about holidays around the world. Each day students got their passport and "traveled" to a new country. The teacher in that classroom would read a story or show a short clip and share information about the traditions in that country. The countries students traveled to were Mexico, India, Italy, England and France. Each day students made a craft to go along with the traditions of that country. They had so much fun learning about how different people in the world celebrate christmas.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we talked about kindness. We started the week by reading "How Full is Your Bucket?" We talked about how everyone has an invisible bucket above their head. When we are hurtful then the water drips out. When we are kind then a drop goes into our bucket and fills it up! Then we sorted stories that were kind and unkind. On Wednesday we watched a video about being kind and on Thursday we listened to a story about an anonymous friend. Every time someone was unkind her heart broke. (When this happened I tore a piece of our paper heart. Then we talked about how we could put her heart back together. But even when we were kind and put it back together it was still not the same. We are working hard at being kind to others and filling up their bucket and keeping their heart together.
