Dental Health

Poem: Overdues
Sight Words: what. this

Reading: Our Cafe strategy this week was Back Up and Reread. We practiced this skill a variety of times throughout the week when reading leveled readers and big read alouds. We use this strategy when we are reading and the sentence does not makes sense. So we back up and reread the sentence. This is an accuracy strategy that helps with our comprehension as well.

This week students learned words in the -ell and and -est word families. After watching videos we then made a list of words that belong to each family.

This week we learned dental words to find in our read aloud. Those words included: check-up, x-ray, cavity, numb, dentist, and braces. As our review we dove a little deeper into the word x-ray. Students taught a friend explaining that x-ray is a picture that shows your bones. We used an x-ray picture app to show how pictures are changed into an x-ray (even though it wasn't completely accurate). It was so cool to see x-rays of a body, head, hand, and foot!

Writing: This week for Writer's Workshop we learned about verbs. To do this we watched a video about verbs and talked about Vicky Verb. She is a super hero that does a lot of things. So we then listed all of the action verbs we could think of. We also talked about labels. We learned that labels help inform readers about our topic. Students watched as we added labels into a writing sample. We used a label poster to help explain labels and we also practiced labeling a friend! We also explored text features. Text features are when authors write words differently to stand out in their writing. We found text features in a few of our favorite books by Mo Willems. We also practiced writing text features on dry erase boards before going back and adding them into our writing. As always students are working extremely hard at writing informational books and uploading them to Google Classroom after creating their book in Book Creator. Here are a few that they have been working on this week!

Math: This week we learned about 1 more and 1 less. To reinforce this skill we use a number line to find the number and see more and less. Students also learned a new math with someone activity to help practice identifying more and less called BUMP. Students take turns rolling a dice and then finding one more (or one less; depending on the board they have chosen). Once they identify the number that student puts their counter on the number circle and the next student takes their turn. If they have the same number they get to "bump" the other player's counter.

We also added a choice to math by myself. Students look at the tens and ones and fill in the addition sentence. Showing tens and ones for place value is a skill that we are hitting hard this nine weeks and will be on the report card!

We also practiced counting on from a given number. You can practice this by saying a number and just start counting. For example if you say count on from 26, students then say, "26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34.."

Content: This week students learned about dental health. We started the week off by learning the basics about our teeth and what we use our teeth for. We wrote down everything that we use our teeth for on a tooth chart. Then we used grocery ads to find food that is good/bad for our teeth. Depending on if we had a smile or frown on our tooth determined if we found food/drinks that were good/bad for our teeth. After gluing pictures, we shared with the class things that we should eat/drink and things that hurt our teeth. Flossing is a big part of taking care of our teeth so we practiced flossing. We used legos (as our teeth), playdoh (as food), and string (as floss) to practice. We also got a visit from a dental hygienist who told us about the dentist office and the importance of keeping our teeth clean and healthy. She showed us how to keep them clean and xrays of teeth! On Friday we finished our unit by writing about a way we can keep our teeth healthy. We used marshmallows for the teeth!

SEL: This week we continued learning about honesty. We started the week by completing our "Qualities of an Honest Person" chart. We learned that an honest person uses:
-their head to work hard to reach their goals without cheating.
-their hands to return things that do not belong to them.
-their mouth to say words that are true.
We continued learning about honesty throughout the week by listening to different scenarios and determining if the person was honest/dishonest. We also read the story, "Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal". This was a review of tattling vs. reporting, however we also discussed the importance of being truthful when someone comes to the teacher with a report. After reading we then sorted scenarios between squeal and big deal. On Friday we used an example of a boy who was not honest and watched "The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf".

Parent University STEM Night: On Thursday we invited families to come to school and participate as a family in a STEM activity. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. With Valentine's Day around the corner families were given the challenge to create a carrier to carry a box of candy hearts down a zip line made by the teachers. They were only allowed certain materials and 10 minutes to create before testing. It was so fun to watch the creativity! Here were a few final products! (More pictures and videos are on our instagram account!)

NEXT WEEK:
Reading: Students will...
-learn about the -ump and -unk word families.

Writing: Students will...
-learn about words that get a capital letter.
-use resources to help in informational writing.

Math: Students will...
-learn about a line.
-practice drawing 2D shapes.

Content: Students will celebrate valentine's day throughout the week. We will have our party on Tuesday with a variety of fun activities throughout the week.
