Gingerbread Man

Poem: Gingerbread Man
Sight Words: in, he

Reading: This week our comprehension strategy was Summarize. Summarize means to retell the story using words like "then", "after", "so", etc. Students practiced this skill throughout the week by summarizing a gingerbread read aloud to their partner.

Our word family this week was the -og word family. As always, we watch our prezi to generate words and then make our list. We then go on a word hunt which helps with the skill blending. Writing 3 letter words at home with help your child master the skill of blending 3 sounds to read the word.

This week we read The Gingerbread Man. The vocabulary word that we spent time to review this week was delicious. We used the Duck and Goose app Draw and Tell to write the word, pick a sticker and explain what is delicious.

Writing: This week we learned about speech bubbles. We talked about our favorite books Elephant and Piggie and how speech bubbles are found throughout the book! We used an Elephant and Piggie drawing to create our own speech bubbles. Students were then encouraged to go back and add speech bubbles to their own writing.

We also talked about how we can write a 3-page book about topics that are not true. We generated a new list of characters, settings, and things that can happen in a fantasy story.

Math: Addition was our skill for the week. Our vocabulary word was addend and students put the word in book creator as they explained that and addend is a number that is added together to find the answer to an addition problem. We also met Gus the Plus. We discussed that the plus sign means that we are adding together. Throughout the week we learned strategies to help fluently add. We practiced adding with a number line and math tools. Another choice was also added to Math by Myself to practice addition. For this students draw a number and uses pom poms to show a way to make that number. Students also practiced with the Butterfly Math Addition app.

Content: This week we read a variety of Gingerbread Man stories. We spent time comparing different stories and sharing our favorite version. We started out the week by going on a Gingerbread Man hunt! The Gingerbread Man left clues around the school that we scanned to find out the next location in the school! We were lead back to our classroom and found a surprise! Students enjoyed tasting the Gingerbread Man while reading a story. Students also listened to the Gingerbread Baby and completed a gingerbread house craft.

SEL: Our social lesson focus this week was Integrity. We started the week off by reading the book, "What If Everybody Did That?" We talked about that just because someone else is doing something that isn't right, it doesn't make it okay for us to do it either. Later in the week we sorted picture cards into good choices and poor choices. To finish the week, we reviewed rules around the building including the classroom, lunch, and recess. They were on point in knowing all the rules!
