Fire Safety

Poem: Where Am I?
Sight Words: am, go

Reading: Our focus this week was Text Features. Text features include headings. captions, bold words, glossaries, labels, and more! We talked about how these things help us learn more about the book we are reading. We rolled a dice and found text features in a pigeon book this week.

Our word family this week was the -am word family. We generated a list and watched a video of -am words.

This week we read the book "Everybody Works" and added the following words to the vocabulary chart: work, office, volunteer, earn, hobby, and protecting. On Thursday we made a short book on book creator about a few of our hobbies. A hobby is something we do for fun in our spare time. Lots of our hobbies included our family.

Writing: This week in writer's workshop we learned how to start a sentence with words other than I and we worked on using beginning and ending sounds for unknown words. Students are writing simple sentences but are learning that they can write more. Those words that are not sight words are tricky but students are writing the beginning and ending sounds for those words.

Math: Students learned about the word sort this week. They added the word to their journal and explained that sort means to put things that are the same together. We listed ways we could sort including by size, color, shape, clothes, food, shoes, toys, etc. Throughout the week we exercised our understanding of sort by explaining what didn't belong in a group of pictures. Students were shown a screen with a variety of food and a bear. They had to explain that the bear didn't belong because the rest was food.

Content: This week we spent lots of time learning about Fire Safety. We started the week by completing a KWL chart with things we already knew about fire safety, what we wonder about fire safety, and what we learned (came later in the week). We then listened to a real firefighter and we learned more about his job and what we should do to stay safe.

We talked about the important tools that a firefighter needs to fight fires and one of those tools was a fire truck. We used shapes to make a fire truck. Then we talked about our fire safety plan at home after talking with our families about the importance of a meeting spot. We finished the week with our fire dog craft. Our fire dog has fire rules on bones.

Morning Meeting: Each week for our morning meeting, we will have a social skill that we will focus on for the entire week. This week we talked about using our hands for good, and specifically not hitting. We read the story, "No more Hitting for Little Hamster" on Monday. Then we watched a video about keeping our hands to ourselves on Tuesday. On Wednesday we sorted hearts that had good and bad ways to use our hands. On Thursday we did role playing and talked through situations. Next week we will talk about blurting out and how it is important to raise our hand.
