First Week of School

We've made it a full week of school! Whew! We learned a lot!! We learned new procedures and expectations in and outside of the classroom, made lots of friends, and had fun playing. Take a closer look at the fun we had this week!

Reading:
We learned that there are 3 ways to read a book. So many kiddos come in saying that they don't know how to read, however they do!! We added each way to read to our big number 3 as the week went on.

1. We can read the pictures. This is when we explain what is happening in the pictures without paying any attention to the words on the page.
2. We can retell a familiar story. This is when we've listened/read a story and can look at the pages and recall what happens.
3. We can read the words. As the year progresses we will learn sight words which will allow us to read the words in simple sentences.

We always start the year off with the reading choice; Read to Self. Read to Self is when students get their own book box and read by them self. As a class we write down our expectations during Read to Self on an I-Chart that is displayed in our classroom all year long. This helps us be successful and continue to grow as readers. Check out the awesome readers below!

Math: We also started off by exploring math tools. These are things that include, but not limited to, counting bears, links, attribute shapes, linking cubes, and blocks. These will help us solve math problems during the school year so it's nice to have this time to play and get use to using these tools.

We finished the week off by reading the story "The Kissing Hand". This is a great story to read the first week of school as it talks about a little raccoon and how he is scared and nervous to start school. We made our own little raccoon craft and illustrated how we felt on the first day of school.

Charts Galore!
We love charts in kindergarten! We will make them all year long! Here are a few that we made this week. This first chart is hanging in our room and displays all of our names! On the first day we practiced writing our names and will watch as we get better at writing them each and every day!

This chart is also hanging in our room. This chart explains our expectations when using flexible seating. As a class we filled in the blanks to this chart and modeled correct and incorrect ways to sit at these options. Throughout the year kiddos have the choice to sit at places that they feel will help them do their best.

Playworks: Coach Abby came this week from Playworks to show us different games and activities to do at recess. She is awesome and is helping us be so successful during recess each and every day. This week during our time with Coach Abby we learned how to play Switch, and a few other games. We also learned how to problem solve by playing Ro-Sham-Bo (rock, paper, scissors). We did great and will continue to learn more as the year goes on!

Take a look at all of us on the first day of school!!
