Grinch

Poem: Did You Ever See?
Sight Words: did, play

Reading:
Comprehension Strategy: This week we spent a lot of time retelling stories. When retelling stories we use our retelling chart that requires us to recall the characters, setting, and what happened during the story. It also addresses problem and solution.

We learned words in the -op word family this week!

Vocabulary: This week students found words in the "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Those words were sneer, beneath, mistletoe, nimbly, ramshackle, and flue.

iPads: This week we used the Grinch and on Chatterpix shared how we would make the grinch grin!

We also started working with a new app called BOOM Learning. This app has a deck of cards that are assigned that students work through a task. This week they were building CVC words using christmas light bulbs.

Writing: This week during Writer's Workshop we talked about speech bubbles. We found speech bubbles in some of our favorite stories like Elephant and Piggie. Then we practiced giving the Grinch a speech bubble using the app Balloon Stickies. After our lesson we added speech bubbles to our writing.

Math: We also practiced addition within 10 a variety of ways. We used number lines and counters to show how to add. Make sure to practice with those addition flash cards that went home! This is a 2nd nine weeks skill that will be tested!

Vocabulary: This week students learned about the word addends. Addends are numbers that are being added together. We looked at written addition sentences and circles the addends.

iPads: This week students completed a slides assignment of adding with a number line. They did pretty good showing their answer by dragging the circle to the answer on the number line!

Content: This week we had so much fun surrounded around the book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". We read the story during reading and during the week we brainstormed ways to make the grinch grin. With our answers we finished our Grinch craft to hang in the hallway!

We also had a lot of fun with our science experiment. We used a balloon with a heart drawn on it. Then we added baking soda to the balloon and put the balloon on top of the bottle. When the baking soda hit the vinegar inside it then began to blow the balloon up. We watched the heart grow 3 sizes!

After reading the story we played a favorite each year called Punch a Bunch! Students take turns punching through a cup covered with tissue paper to find a paper inside with a question from the story written on it. Students did their best to answer the question without looking back in the book!

On Friday we had Grinch day when we wore all green and watched the movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". While we watched the movie we enjoyed green cookies and juice. We also had fun during reading and wrote sight words using green glue.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we continued learning about listening and following directions. We read the story Lucey Walker Nonstop Talker, listened to a story from Howard B. Wigglebottom, then helped determine when he was listening and when he wasn't from the story. We also matched descriptions to our whole body listening posters from last week.

HOUR OF CODE: This week we also participated in The Hour of Code. Students played games on the ipad called kodable and ScratchJr. Students enjoyed learning how to code with these fun and engaging games.
