Reading: This week we continued to learn about the 3 ways to read. This is so important as we launch CAFE and Daily 5 in our reading block. As students come into the classroom we ask if they know how to read. Many have the same replies, "no". We learn that there are 3 different ways to read.

1) Read the pictures. Kids can look at the pictures and describe what they see without reading or looking at the words. This is what we encourage for more challenging books that are bigger and more complex than those at our reading level.

2) Read the words. This is what we encourage kiddos to do once they begin to learn sight words and are reading leveled books. We teach students to use their knowledge of simple sight words (I, see, the, etc.) and the picture to help read sentences such as "I see the dog".

3) Retell the story. After reading a story students can then sit with another person and recall important details of the story.

Writing: This was the first week for ABC Bootcamp! Throughout the next few weeks students will be learning the correct way to write each lowercase and capital letter of the alphabet. When learning about each letter students start by watching the letter video, then exploring the letter in more depth with our pocket chart. After modeling the correct way to write each letter, students are given the opportunity to practice on their own. The letters that students worked on this week included Ll, Ii, Tt, and Oo. In addition to writing the letters we also made the letters out of playdoh. Check out the letter Ll video below!

Math: This week we starting learning all about Numbers 1-6. Students learn how to write the number, number word and represent the numbers by drawing pictures. Here is what this looks like:

Content: Each week there will be a new focus for our content time. This is when we explore science and social studies topics that are age appropriate and engaging. This week we spent time learning about one another and sharing interesting things about ourselves. Students played games throughout the week in order to get to know others.
