Dr. Seuss

Poem: Mary Had a Little Lamb
Sight Words: saw, went

Reading: This week we learned words in the -ame and -ale word families. We tried something new this week with Google Slides. Students had dry erase boards and watched as pictures were displayed on the eno board. Students wrote the word on their own then checked their word when the next slide showed up. Students loved it and it helped them learn to make the next word correct! We also talked about how the bossy e is found in both of these word families. We used the chart as an introduction.

We reviewed Main Idea throughout the week getting ready for report card testing. The Main Idea is what the story is mostly about. Key details are other things that happen in the story that support the main idea.

Our vocabulary went along with "The Lorax". The words we learned this week were: grim, greed, midnight, pardon, smog, and proper.

This week for ipads students worked on rhyming words using the app Balloon Stickies. Students used a picture of the Cat in the Hat that had been airdropped to them to then add speech bubbles of rhyming words.

Another project students worked on was to recall the main idea and key details from the story "Horton Hears a Who". Students first started by scanning a QR code of the story. After listening they used a picture of Horton that had been shared with them to use in Chatterpix and record the main idea of the story.

Writing: We started the week with comparisons. We learned that comparisons can help better explain our facts about a topic. We talked about ice cream first and wrote comparisons. The rest of the week we reviewed the informational writing process. Students then got with their ipad partner and wrote an informational book about Dr. Seuss. Students started by researching Dr. Seuss using PebbleGo. Then using Book Creator students wrote their topic sentence, 3 facts, and feeling ending. After submitting their finished book to Google Classroom we watched them as a class.

Math: We spent the week reviewing math skills that we have learned this nine weeks. These skills include creating a number using tens and ones, subtraction within 5, and identifying greater and less. We used math tools and ipads throughout the week to reinforce these skills. On day we reviewed subtraction and played SWAT IT as students found the answer. With ipads students used subtraction flash cards to then use and show the problem in Doodle Buddy. After saving each subtraction problem from Doodle Buddy they created a subtraction book in Book Creator.

Content: This week was a SEUSStastic week! Each day we celebrated by having a spirit day that went along with a Dr. Seuss book. Monday students brought in a stuffed animal and we read "If I Ran the Zoo". On Tuesday students wore their pajamas and we read "The Sleep Book". On Wednesday students wore crazy mix-matched and inside out clothes and we read "Wacky Wednesday". On Thursday students wore silly socks for the book "Fox in Socks". On Friday we finished the week with "The Cat in the Hat" and students wore their hat to school. Other things that we did throughout the week include a guided drawing of cat in the hat, opposite drawings on feet, and making a cat in the hat mask. On Friday we also had rotations with the kindergarten teachers. Each teacher designed a Dr. Seuss STEM project that each kiddo in each kindergarten class made and tested. It was so much fun!!

Read Across America: This year for Read Across America students were split into 4 small groups of 4 and rotated around the room listening to stories and working on a small activity that paired with each book. At each rotation students scanned the QR code with an ipad to listen to the story. Here were the rotations that were set up around the room:

Green Eggs and Ham: After listening to the story, students used ipads that were placed at that location to create rhyming words. Students used a picture of a green egg that was previously airdropped to them and used Pic Collage to then write rhyming words inside each egg.

Fox in Socks: After listening to the story, students used crayons to create/color silly designs on a sock printable.

Hop on Pop: While listening to the story students were able to enjoy some popcorn at this station. After the story was over, students grabbed the plastic popcorn container and sat in a circle. Students took turns passing the container and pulling out a "popcorn kernel" with an -op word on it. This is very similar to a game we play on Fridays called SNAP, so they knew the expectations with this activity.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish: While listening to this story, students were able to grab a bag of colored goldfish crackers and eat. After the story students used a fishing pole (made of a yard stick, yarn, and a round magnet) to "fish" for shapes. Upon catching a fish students looked at the shape that was on the fish and named that 2D shape having the rest of the group practice drawing it on their dry erase boards.

SEL: This week we finished our unit on Confidence and Self Esteem. We started by reading "The OK Book". This story is about being okay at a lot of different things, but not the best. We talk about how it takes practice and patience but we will all become great at something. We read the story, "Be Who You Are". This story is about being proud of who you are, where you live, what you look like. etc. If you are different, be proud and accept it with pride! We also spent one morning rolling a dice and finishing the prompt. Prompts included "I am great at...", "3 words that describe me are...". We finished the week with a confident super hero pose that made us feel confident!
